Punjab Launch Special Ration Cards for Labourers

In a historic move aimed at uplifting the working class, the Punjab government has announced a major relief initiative that will benefit over a million industrial labourers across the province. Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has given the green light to launch a special ration card program—the largest of its kind in Punjab’s history.

Set to officially roll out on May 1st, this program will provide essential monthly ration support to 1.25 million industrial workers. The scheme, valued at a staggering Rs. 40 billion, is being praised as a game-changer for the labour community. Not only will this help address food insecurity, but it also marks a significant step toward recognizing the contributions of the working class in Pakistan’s economic growth.

To ensure proper funding, the Punjab government will initially invest Rs. 20 billion. In addition, the Labour Department and Social Security Department will each contribute Rs. 10 billion from their respective budgets. This collaborative funding model highlights the government’s serious commitment to supporting labourers at every level.

The Bank of Punjab has been assigned the task of issuing the ration cards. These cards will be provided in the name of the household’s head, making it easier to distribute benefits fairly and efficiently. Once the Punjab Cabinet finalizes the monthly amount, these cards will start delivering much-needed relief directly to the hands of the workers.

This initiative is not just a temporary fix. Legislation is in the pipeline to ensure the long-term sustainability and legal backing of the program. By including existing beneficiaries of the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) and other welfare schemes, the government aims to reach a wider segment of society without duplicating resources.

Overall, this bold step by the Punjab government is a promising start to improving the lives of those who have long been overlooked. With economic challenges hitting low-income families the hardest, the launch of this ration card program signals hope, dignity, and a brighter future for millions.
